Whether you’re looking for a designer splurge or a fast-fashion piece, it always helps to get a recommendation (or nine). This is especially true when it comes to the topic of coats and winter jackets. After all, they’re often an investment and always the focal point of an outfit, so you couldn’t take buying one lightly even if you tried. Luckily, however, we’re pros in this department, and when you combine all our editors’ experiences in the buying arena, we have more insight on the topic than we know what to do with. So whether you need a new coat or simply want some recs to keep in mind, continue on for our favorite brands, why they’re our favorites, and, of course, our shopping selections from each.

Acne Studios: “Acne Studios does really, truly lovely coats that will stand the test of time. It’s an investment but so worth it.”

Who What Wear: “I may be a tad biased, but the coats from our Who What Wear collection are fabulous. Especially in the under-$100 category, they really stand out from the pack.”

Also available in more sizes.
Aritzia: “I always find amazing coats from Aritzia’s brands, including TNA, Babaton, and Wilfred. The wool coats are so soft, warm, and beautifully fitted, while the puffers (which I’m pretty sure already qualify as a viral trend) are quite literally a lifesaver for New York winters.”
Unreal Fur: “For a faux-fur coat option, I’m really into the Australian brand Unreal Fur. The coats are super soft and perfect for dressing up a winter look.”
Nanushka: “I’ve never seen faux-leather pieces like the ones from Nanushka, and anything the brand touches feels luxe.”

Saint Laurent: “If you’re looking to invest in a classic coat that you’ll love for years to come, you pretty much cannot go wrong with Saint Laurent.”

Ganni: “I bought my first Ganni coat a few years ago, and the brand has become my go-to for outerwear that’s timeless but never boring.”
The Arrivals: “The Arrivals is the first brand I think of when I need a new coat that will actually last. While, yes, these are investment pieces, I can assure you they last the test of time and keep you extremely warm.”
& Other Stories: “& Other Stories has a great mix of both on-trend and timeless coats at reasonable prices. Teddy, leopard, faux fur, plaid—they pretty much have it all right now. I just wish L.A. weather would let me wear them!”
Reformation: “Reformation is a brand I always look to for coats that hit at a great price point.”

Balenciaga: “For bigger investment pieces, my eyes are on Balenciaga. This season, its sculptural hourglass silhouettes feel like collector’s items.”

Stand: “The standout coats from Scandinavian brand Stand have completely won me over. I have my eye on so many of their pieces.”
