The Topps Now September update this time around includes six players, including Topps Now Byron Buxton, Topps Now Brandon Nimmo, Topps Now Brian Anderson, Topps Now Kyle Higashioka, Topps Now Tanner Houck and Topps Now Tyler Stephenson. As a counter-balance to last week, this one is heavy on position players. (You can see the first week of Topps Now players here as well if you missed them.)
You can earn three of the six players by completing all of the moments. First let’s go through the players.
- Topps Now Brandon Nimmo is a 97 overall and can play all three outfield position. He’s a bit of a platoon option where he has 112 contact vs. right-handed pitching and 112 power. The fielding is competent and he has enough speed to not be a liability either.
- Topps Now Brian Anderson has a Team Affinity version that feels outdated at this point so this is a good update with a 98 overall card. The big upgrades here come in the form of major power boosts against RHP and LHP, and he’s also much better at hitting left-handed pitchers from a contact perspective. He also remains a wonderful utility player to play all over the diamond.
- Topps Now Byron Buxton is a 98 overall, and like Brian Anderson, his Team Affinity version feels a little outdated at this point. So this version comes equipped with stronger hitting stats (albeit still not amazing), and he remains incredibly fast and a talented outfielder. Overall, this still feels a little light for a 98 overall, but center fielders have different parameters that give them high ratings.
- Topps Now Kyle Higashioka is a 96 overall catcher. He has maxed out power against RHP and 100 power against LHP. The 32 speed isn’t terrible for a catcher, and he also has a great arm. I’m all for some new options at catcher — even if we’ve already been spoiled as of late with options.
- Topps Now Tanner Houck is the sole pitcher here. He is a 95 overall and has a 4-seam, slider, sinker and splitter. He has 101 K/9 but we’ve seen a lot of great Topps Now pitchers as of late and I would not put this one in that group. Still, the splitter makes him a little unique at least and he still has a sinker too.
- Topps Now Tyler Stephenson is the other new catcher. We had a gold Prospects Stephenson already, but this one is much better. His hitting stats are very consistent across the board, but he’s just not quite as great in the field as Higashioka.
