According to a recent report from Polygon, citing a reliable source close to Microsoft, there is a chance Microsoft could buy EA soon:

Some of the names being thrown around as possible acquisitions by Microsoft are, frankly, astounding, even unthinkable. But the fact that they are doing the rounds is instructive. The most recent one we heard (from a reliable source close to Microsoft) was, in fact, Electronic Arts. We also heard a whisper about Valve and about Korean outfit PUBG Corp., which Microsoft last year signed to a timed exclusive for its hit survival shooter, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.

This is obviously a rumor of rumors, but as the Polygon’s piece entire premise says — Microsoft does have an exclusivity problem. The Xbox One hasn’t had a great cycle compared to Sony, and Microsoft’s huge war chest of cash would make a purchase of EA quite doable (much less any smaller publishers).

“Because of where we are in the lifecycle of all these things, I’m expecting to hear Microsoft announce something very, very shortly,” said SuperData Research CEO van Dreunen.

Of course, given EA’s proximity to all things sports gaming and the huge impacts this would have on where games are released — we can’t help but wonder what such a move could mean for sports gaming’s future.

We’ll have more on this rumor if any more smoke appears, and we may just do a roundtable discussing some of the possibilities!
